What is Motion Design?

So you've heard the term motion design, but you wouldn't know how tell your grandmother what it is. Actually... Hey Grandmother! This is what I do for a living :D

Motion design takes skills from many disciplines and jams it into one. Film making, graphic design, art direction, illustration, sound design and more. With these skills, the motion designer creates videos to tell a story, convey a message, or tell the audience a bit of information.

You see it on TV...

You see it at the movies.

You see it on the internet.

You see it in Times Square.

Motion design is a creative service and generally speaking falls into either advertising or entertainment.

It has many more stylistic variations than you see here. But one thing that binds most of us motion designers together is that we do it for the love of creating. We can't imagine not doing it.

It's a great time in history to be a creative designer.

And while creative services aren't strictly art... we do get to hone our creative skills for the art we create outside of commercial projects.

So the next time you turn on your TV or pull your phone out, you'll probably be experiencing something that a motion designer had a hand in creating. If it's on a screen and it moves.. motion design.
